Asked which of his works he would select as his masterpiece,
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright at the age of 83 replied, "My next one."
Gifted individuals inhabit every locale.
-They are not required to bear signs of public notice.
Serve and satisfy. That's the outcome of design.
Serve a function. Satisfy a sense. The better the design, the better it serves and satisfies.
Things architectural have two parents:
construction and art. Construction serves. Art satisfies.
Beware:
those sugar plums can turn bitter when the bids start coming in. Our society makes it so easy to mix need and want into the same pot.
A mutual assurance
between client and contractor that each understands what the client more knowledgeably has chosen and expects and what the contractor more clearly understands will be built - that's what I'm after.
Designing and drafting
are intensely thoughtful processes, and your thoughts count for a great deal in the making.
Symmetry?
The eye looks for it, the mind's eye expects it, the mind is comforted by it. It's a designer's habituation. Reined in this side of obsession, it suits principles if not purposes.
A tradesman is someone who just might know more than you think he does, work harder than you realize, and may be better at what he does than you are at what you do, nine out of ten.
Stock plans exemplify that old advertising shibboleth, "One size fits all." The good news is that you might be ahead of the game in that a lot of smart, hard thought and complex deeds have gone before you, saved you much time and effort, because it's tough to get the pieces of a house to fit well, functionally, artfully. The bad news is that those pieces probably won't exactly fit you and yours. One size in stock plans does not fit all.
Some of the best designed spaces are the ones you hardly recognize, while they keep on doing that which they're supposed to do.
A bad architect
is one who won't listen to someone wearing overalls.
